4 Things to Consider When Setting Up Care for Aging Loved Ones

As your parent’s age, you may need to consider setting up care for them in their senior years. Whether you choose to do this yourself or have assistance, it is a plan that needs to be formulated and put in place long before it is ever needed. You can sit and discuss items with your parents on what their wishes are in the future should their need for extra assistance arise. This way they feel a part of the process and do not feel as though you’ve abandoned them.

Here are some ideas and topics to consider when it’s time to plan the care your aging loved one needs.

Ensure No Isolation

Isolation is a huge problem for the elderly and seniors who are no longer working or able to work and get out on their own. It is imperative that whatever senior care method you’ve decided on includes some form of socializing throughout the weeks. Isolation can lead to depression and complications with health if not caught early on. It is important that your loved ones get out and socialize with friends or family on a regular basis. This can be done with shopping trips or with the many senior centers that are showing up around the country.

Type of Care Needed

What type of care is needed for your aging loved one? Would they be more relaxed and happy at home with assistance coming to them there? Would they feel more comfortable in a beautiful assisted living location where everything is at their fingertips? Do they need assistance around the clock or with certain tasks throughout the day?

These are all the questions you need to consider and answer with your loved one if possible. If you decide to be their caregiver you also need to have backup options as well so that you are not worn down and unable to care for their needs as you should.

Talk Before Time for Care

Sit down with your loved one when they are able to and discuss what they want in their senior years. Try to have a plan in place for the type of care they wish to have and what their desires are. You do not want to set them up in a place where they are unhappy or leave them at home when they’d prefer assistance close by. Your parents or loved one’s wishes are just as important as your own and should be kept in consideration when making care plans.

Financial Plans

While no one wants to discuss money, it is important that you know and understand your parent’s financial plans for their future. It is imperative that this discussion take place so you can help them better prepare for their senior care plans. Discuss with your parents whether Medicare or Medicaid options are available, if they have funding set aside for care, or need to set it aside, etc. You want to make sure there’s a plan for their needs and help them to get the adequate care they deserve.

Conclusion

While none of these topics are fun or exciting to cover, they need to be covered and considered in the planning stages for your loved ones. Make sure to discuss these options with your loved ones and family members who are involved in the care of your parents or aging family members.
