Challenges To Starting A Home Care Business

Posted in Senior Care | No Comments

Starting a non medical home care business dedicated to helping seniors stay in their homes can be a daunting task even for those who have already worked in the industry. As the old saying goes, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” Where do you start? What should be on your list of tasks before you open your doors for business? Does your state require a license to operate such a business? What type of legal entity should you create? How will you market your business and stand out from your already embedded local competition? How will you answer questions like: “How long have you been in business?”, or “What’s the difference between you and the other two companies I just interviewed?” In addition, operational issues like who will be answering your agency main phone line when someone calls need to be addressed so that the call doesn’t go to voicemail and lose the potential customer.

Getting The Right Answers To Questions

There are myriad of related questions that need to be answered and a plan in place to address such. If you are starting a home care business without the backing of a franchise or similar organization behind you then you need to be sure you have thought through all of the questions/scenarios before launching your business. Taking initial steps in the wrong direction due to a lack of knowledge can lead to a ‘black eye’ that some agencies never recover from. Once your doors are open for business you need to have a clear path to success which includes marketing and operational plans so you know exactly what you are to be doing each day. Where will you go to find clients? What will you say when you get there? How is what you are saying different to the others who market in that same location? How will you find quality caregivers? What will you pay them? What if an important issue comes up that you don’t know how to handle – who will be your resource for help? Having a detailed, executable plan and key knowledge resources in place to support ongoing day to day operations is key to the success of any new business. The lack of such a plan and key knowledge resources are two of the main reasons that many new businesses fail during their first year.

Whatever path you choose to get into the home care industry – you need to first determine your path forwards and then design a plan to achieve the goals and milestones within that plan.
